Sports Report

Wrekin continues to excel in a variety of sports!

Cross-Country

Chloe took part in the Cardiff Cross Challenge. In the U15 race, she came a brilliant 15th place (out of 70+ girls), and still only in Third Form,  The Liverpool Challenge is next!

Rugby

The U16 rugby team had an impressive 36-19 win against local rivals Abraham Darby. In a dominant forward display, Leo scored four tries. Moment of the match goes to Charlie who prevented a try with an excellent ‘hold-up’ tackle, which allowed just enough time for his team mates to run in and deny the opposition a try. A great team effort and a deserved win.

On Saturday, the U14 rugby team followed up last week’s win with another strong performance, unfortunately going down 17-10 in a closely fought contest.  The U15s won a tight battle, keeping a strong Abraham Darby team at bay, and giving them confidence for their National Cup game this week.

Hockey

On Wednesday, the Lancaster Girls played a block against Birchfield, with many players representing the school for the first time. They came away with two wins and a draw. The Girls U18s played against Ellesmere College and won convincingly with a 7-3 scoreline.

On Friday, the Girls U18s put in an outstanding performance at the Midlands Finals and finished runners-up overall, missing out on National Finals with a 2-1 loss in the final. Whilst this was a great all round team performance, an honourable mention must go to Saffron, who scored all of Wrekin’s goals and was voted as Player of the Tournament by all of the coaches!

On Saturday, the Lancasters scored big wins over Wolverhampton Grammar School, but the game of the day was the U15s, who came back from behind to win 4-2 in a hard fought game.

Football

On Wednesday, five Lancaster football teams were involved in fixtures against Prestfelde and Packwood with some excellent results for the boys teams. Included in this, the U13 girls had their first match and although the result didn’t go our way, they played really well.  The U13 boys also had a convincing 9-1 win over Oswestry on Saturday, but the U15B team lost out.

The U16s had a win in football in the second round of the National Cup. Well done to all who played! The 1st XI came out second best to St Peter’s, but produced some excellent individual performances.

Badminton

Two badminton teams were in action on Wednesday, the seniors in a competitive game against Moreton hall and the U16s losing narrowly to Burton Borough on count back.  A mixed team lost out to Oswestry on Saturday.

Basketball

The team had two matches this week. They played well in both games, but unfortunately lost out on both occasions.

Individual Highlight of the week goes to Simba!

Congratulations on his debut for Shrewsbury Town in their 3-2 win over Walsall in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.  The Head Coach of the Club issued this statement after the game:

“In the squad today, there are six academy players. One of those is an under-16 (Simba) who came on for his debut. I think he is the youngest ever player in the history of the football club, which is amazing.”
