Sports Report

Rugby 

The Under 14s cruised to a county cup win at Burton Borough. The Senior VIIs squad had victories against two teams from Wirral Grammar and Shrewsbury School, in a successful prelude to Rosslyn Park. 

On Saturday, over 100 Under 12 and Under 13s played at home in a triangular tournament with St Joseph’s College, Stoke and Abraham Darby. The Wrekin Under 12s looked the strongest team in their competition, the Under 13s succumbed to a strong Abraham Darby, but they won their game against St Joseph’s.

Fencing

Wrekin fielded a squad of 17 fencers in a lively away fixture with Shrewsbury School. Congratulations to the sabre team who took a decisive 15 to 10 victory over Shrewsbury. Particular congratulations to Takunda and Alex who won every match they fought in, in a sterling performance.

Finally, congratulations to Lottie who is West Midlands BYC Epee Champion following her 15 -12 win at Packwood on Sunday! Lottie goes on to the National Finals which will be held in Sheffield in May. 

Fives 

The fives team had an excellent outing on Wednesday. John, Fergus, Saffron and Benedict all played exceptionally well in their matches. John and Fergus won three of them. Well done to all who took part.

Netball

The majority of Lancaster girls played in a triangular fixture with Birchfield and Prestfelde. Taking the majority of wins, Wrekin produced some exciting netball.  The Under 15s had a close match against Newport and on Saturday all four Lancaster squads were in action against Hereford Cathedral School with three from four matches ending in convincing wins.

Hockey 

The Boys’ Under 13s team were on fire at the county finals to become Shropshire Champions, the whole team playing at a very high level. On Wednesday, the Girls’ Under 12s finished second in their county finals to also qualify for the Midlands stage.

The Boys’ Under 18 team played in a tough game against Solihull School and despite being 2-1 at half time, the game ended as a 4-3 loss. The Boys’ U16s also played against Solihull and came away with a 1-1 draw.  On Saturday, the Boys’ First team had a tough game against Newport Hockey Club, losing 5-1, but there were plenty of positives to take away from it. 

Football

The First XI ran out 4-2 winners over The Marches. Special mention goes to Man of the Match Sam who stepped up to play at the last minute and bagged himself a brace.  The Under 13s put in their best performance of the campaign, beating a strong William Brookes side 4-1 to progress to the next round of the district cup.

Cross Country 

In the Shropshire Schools Championships on Saturday there were some outstanding performances which saw lots of pupils finishing within the top 20 places. Charlie came a creditable sixth in the Year 7 boys, Amelia was fourth in intermediate girls and qualified to represent Shropshire at the English Schools Finals. And the athlete of the day was, again, Chloe who came first in the Junior Girls and also qualified for the English Schools Finals for Shropshire.

Swimming

At the Shropshire County Swimming Championships, taking part over the last three weekends. Wrekin had several students competing with some outstanding results. Callum, in his first ever County Championships came seventh in the 100m IM final. Finley won one Silver and four Bronze Medals, Charlie took four silver and seven bronze; he had two West Midland Qualifying times and was second overall in the 14yrs age group. Beth had eight gold, three silver and one bronze medal. She had six Midlands District Qualifying times and finished first overall in the 16yrs age group. Esmay had 13 gold, two silver and three bronze medals, 17 Midlands District Qualifying times and was first overall in the 12yrs age group. Sam had 17 gold, one silver, 13 Midlands District Qualifying time and was first overall in the 14yrs age group.
