Welcome To Lancaster

Many of those joining Wrekin College, join at Year 7. We are proud that every year our Year 7 pupils are from a huge number of different independent and state primary schools. Some individuals who join us may know others, while many arrive without knowing anyone. However, through a series of team-building days, specifically designed to facilitate a smooth and joyful transition to senior school, despite the nerves most children feel before the big day.

When joining Wrekin College in Year 7 your child will become a member of Lancaster House. Lancaster is a special area of the school for our Year 7 and 8 pupils where they can be full members of the Wrekin community, but with a little bit of extra support and nurturing while they find their feet. Lancaster is split into Lancaster Girls’ and Lancaster Boys’ Houses and the House forms the pupils’ day-to-day base. This is where they register, get changed, store their things and enjoy their break times.

Let’s get started

The first step to joining Wrekin is to get in touch. Drop us an email or give us a call.  We can guide you through the whole admissions process and address any questions, big or small, about how to join. We can arrange for you to come in for a personalised tour, or perhaps you might prefer to visit on an Open Day. The first step is simply to say hello. The next step is to complete a Registration Form and pay a £100 registration fee in order to sit our entrance exam.

Entrance Exam

Once you have registered you will be asked to complete our 11+ exam entry form which enters your child for our 11+ Entrance Exam. Wrekin College follows a non-selective approach. Our 11+ Entrance Exam assesses potential pupils’ ability to cope with the academic life of Wrekin; if a pupil shows this potential and places are available, a place will be offered. No special preparation is required or expected for this exam which includes Maths, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning based on the Year 6 curriculum. Those that do particularly well in their Entrance Exam will be invited back to sit for an Academic Scholarship.

Scholarships

Wrekin College offers a number of different scholarships for pupils who show exceptional ability and promise in a particular area, as well as the ability to inspire and act as a role model for others. Scholarships or exhibitions (where there is evidence of ability and potential but not quite up to the level of a full scholarship) are usually accompanied by a financial reward of up to 25% of fees. The following scholarships are available; Academic, Sport, Music, Dance, Art or Design Technology, Performing Arts or All-Rounder (known as a Pendle award). You can choose for your child to be assessed for a scholarship (except Academic Scholarships which are by invitation) by filling in the appropriate sections on your Entrance Exam entry form.

Let’s Talk Money

At our independent senior school, our community thrives on a diverse array of gifts, talents, and personalities. We firmly believe that financial circumstances should not hinder access to this enriching environment. We want to play a part in the lives of those who will go on to shape the world of the future. We are proud to run a Foundation that provides bursaries to help those that may not be able to pay the full fee. Bursaries are means-tested and can assist with the offer of reduced fees. The likely contribution a pupil will make to the life of the school will be taken into account as well as the financial circumstances of the parent or guardian. Bursary applications are confidential to the Head, Bursar and Governors.

As well as scholarships, awarded to those displaying exceptional talent in specific areas, and bursaries, provided for cases of financial hardship, there are a range of additional remissions. There are sibling discounts available when three or more siblings attend Wrekin and/or Old Hall. There is also a 10% fee remission for members of HM Forces, Old Wrekinians and Old Hallians. For more information on scholarships, bursaries and fee remissions please contact our Admissions team.

Getting to Wrekin

We know the school run can be hectic. That is why we run a comprehensive transport service throughout Shropshire and the west of Wolverhampton. Prices depend on which route is selected.

Boarding

Boarding allows pupils to enjoy the independence and community spirit which comes from living with their peers. It can be great fun, and it also helps young people develop self-discipline, confidence, and an ability to get on with others. Some pupils join as day pupils but choose to become boarders later in their school careers, especially in the Sixth Form when it offers a stepping stone towards university life. For others, particularly those whose parents live abroad or have to travel extensively or move around for their jobs, boarding offers stability and continuity throughout their time at school.
