Welcome To Year 9

Plenty of pupils opt to join us into Year 9, rather than Year 7. This is an ideal time to join as all of our Year 7 and 8 pupils are leaving Lancaster House to go to Senior Houses; friendship groups reform and new ways have to be learned as the pupils enter the senior years at Wrekin. Year 9 is an exciting time as pupils start to prepare for their GCSE studies, join our CCF and are given more responsibility.

When joining Year 9 your child will become a member of one of our senior Houses; Tudor, York and Bayley for boys, Clarskon and Roslyn for girls. House spirit is strong at Wrekin and our various House competitions are always hotly contested! Day pupils and boarders are fully integrated into Houses, with our day pupils benefiting from our boarding ethos, round-the-clock care and extensive activities.

Entrance Exam

Once you have registered there are a number of options regarding entrance exams.

Wrekin Entrance Exam: The 13+ Entrance examination comprises papers in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Common Entrance (for pupils currently at independent school): Some opt to sit for Common Entrance at their current prep school. This exam takes place at the candidate’s prep school in May/June of the year of entry. Papers are sent for marking to the senior school specified by the candidate. There is no requirement for candidates taking Common Entrance examinations to take any other exams to enter Wrekin.

Academic Scholarship: Those who wish it, can opt to sit the 13+ Academic Scholarship which includes extended papers in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is also an academic interview with the Headmaster.

Scholarships

Wrekin offers a number of different scholarships for pupils who show exceptional ability and promise in a particular area, as well as the ability to inspire and act as a role model for others. Scholarships or exhibitions (where there is evidence of ability and potential but not quite up to the level of a full scholarship) are usually accompanied by a financial reward of up to 25% of fees. The following scholarships are available; Academic, Sport, Music, Dance, Art or Design Technology, Performing Arts or All-Rounder (known as a Pendle award). You can choose for your child to be assessed for a scholarship by filling in the appropriate sections on your Entrance Exam entry form.

Let’s Talk Money

A broad range of gifts, talents and personalities only enriches our community and financial luck should be no barrier to this. We want to play a part in the lives of those who will go on to shape the world of the future. We are proud to run a Foundation that provides bursaries to help those that may not be able to pay the full fee. Bursaries are means-tested and can assist with the offer of reduced fees. The likely contribution a pupil will make to the life of the school will be taken into account as well as the financial circumstances of the parent or guardian. Bursary applications are confidential to the Head, Bursar and Governors.

As well as scholarships (for those talented in a particular area) and bursaries (for cases of financial hardship) there are a range of additional remissions. There are sibling discounts available when three or more siblings attend Wrekin and/or Old Hall. There is also a 10% fee remission for members of HM Forces, Old Wrekinians and Old Hallians. For more information on scholarships, bursaries and remissions please contact our Admissions team.

Getting to Wrekin

We know the school run can be hectic. That is why we run a comprehensive transport service throughout Shropshire and the west of Wolverhampton. Prices depend on which route is selected.

Boarding

Boarding allows pupils to enjoy the independence and community spirit which comes from living with their peers. It can be great fun, and it also helps young people develop self-discipline, confidence, and an ability to get on with others. Some pupils join as day pupils but choose to become boarders later in their school careers, especially in the Sixth Form when it offers a stepping stone towards university life. For others, particularly those whose parents live abroad or have to travel extensively or move around for their jobs, boarding offers stability and continuity throughout their time at school.
