Welcome To Sixth Form

Wrekin offers a truly bespoke Sixth Form experience, providing support, guidance and challenge whilst equipping students for life beyond the classroom.

The Sixth Form is an important and distinctive part of Wrekin. Academically, students specialise, choosing subjects, including A levels and BTECs, they enjoy and are good at – and which will help them on their way to their chosen university courses, apprenticeships, and careers.

Wrekin Sixth Formers enjoy greater autonomy and have a different relationship with their teachers. Many take on leadership roles of one kind or another as a result of their new status among the pupil body. A dedicated Sixth Form Centre opened in September 2018 offers our Sixth Formers a great space in which to socialise. As well as providing the Sixth Formers with a haven during the school day, the Centre is a base for social events in the evening. Our library and quiet study areas provide plenty of space to work.

While in Sixth Form, our students have access to a range of opportunities to broaden their academic reach, including work experience, exchanges with schools including South Africa, Australia, Argentina and India, and advice on planning productive gap years. There is also the chance to do an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ); an extended study on a topic of your choice which not only impresses university admissions officers, but is worth UCAS points.

Wrekin has combined the best elements of a traditional boarding ethos and those of a Sixth Form College to create a unique Sixth Form experience that offers a real stepping stone to an exciting and bright future. Whether the next step after Wrekin is university, apprenticeship, internship, employment, entrepreneurship or beyond, Wrekin has the expertise to advise and assist.

Scholarships

Wrekin offers a number of different scholarships for pupils who show exceptional ability and promise in a particular area, as well as the ability to inspire and act as a role model for others. Scholarships or exhibitions (where there is evidence of ability and potential but not quite up to the level of a scholarship) are usually accompanied by a financial reward of up to 25% of fees. The following scholarships are available; Academic, Sport, Music, Dance, Art or Design Technology, Performing Arts or All-Rounder (known as a Pendle award). You can choose for your child to be assessed for a scholarship by letting our admissions department know; they will then talk you through the next steps.

Let’s Talk Money

A broad range of gifts, talents and personalities only enriches our community and financial luck should be no barrier to this. We want to play a part in the lives of those who will go on to shape the world of the future. We are proud to run a Foundation that provides bursaries to help those that may not be able to pay the full fee. Bursaries are means-tested and can assist with the offer of reduced fees. The likely contribution a pupil will make to the life of the school will be taken into account as well as the financial circumstances of the parent or guardian. Bursary applications are confidential to the Head, Bursar and Governors.

As well as scholarships (for those talented in a particular area) and bursaries (for cases of financial hardship) there are a range of additional remissions. There are sibling discounts available when three or more siblings attend Wrekin and/or Old Hall. There is also a 10% fee remission for members of HM Forces, Old Wrekinians and Old Hallians. For more information on scholarships, bursaries and remissions please contact our Admissions team.

Getting to Wrekin

We know the school run can be hectic. That is why we run a comprehensive transport service throughout Shropshire and the west of Wolverhampton. Prices depend on which route is selected.

Boarding

Boarding allows pupils to enjoy the independence and community spirit which comes from living with their peers. It can be great fun, and it also helps young people develop self-discipline, confidence, and an ability to get on with others. Some pupils join as day pupils but choose to become boarders later in their school careers, especially in the Sixth Form when it offers a stepping stone towards university life.

Pupils can join Wrekin at any time, not just at our 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form entry points.
